Graduation, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka
Fawzia began her career as an English teacher, receiving two years of intensive training in 1970-71 at Sri Lanka's premier teacher training institution. Then, she taught at a number of government schools in Sri Lanka - in Badulla, Chilaw, and finally in Kandy. During this period, she also obtained study leave to complete a BA in English, Economics, and Mass Communications at the University of Kelaniya.
Later, she followed George to the Sultanate of Oman and taught English there for three years. In 1987, she, along with Roy, joined George in Austin, TX. Fawzia earned another BA from the University of Texas at Austin. Then, she went for a Masters in Library and Information Sciences, again from UT. She served as a librarian at Spring Hill College, Mobile, AL, and then at the University of Central Arkansas in Conway, AR.
By now, George was in Hong Kong. Fawzia made periodic trips to HK, staying longer at times. She worked as an English teacher at a kindergarten in Tai Po, and later returned to the States to work at the National Institute of Health.
A few years after she settled in Hong Kong, Fawzia began to teach English at Shue Yan University. Teaching, more than librarianship, was her forte. At Shue Yan, she found caring administrators, friendly colleagues, and students who liked her. She was devoted to teaching, spending many hours preparing for lessons and grading papers. She commuted all the way from Sai Kung to North Point and Wan Chai, because she loved both Sai Kung and Shue Yan.
George retired from teaching in 2010. When asked about her retirement, she replied "I have a great job which I enjoy, fine colleagues, and students who like me. Why should I retire?"
